British Gymnastics have introduced the “My Leadership Academy” and it is designed to create a structure which young people can follow to help them develop as leaders within gymnastics environments (schools, clubs and leisure centres). The programme encourages leaders to complete five different ‘topic’ areas:

MY Learning: Leaders are tasked with completing several different courses, both generic and sport specific.

MY Development: Leaders are tasked with identifying a mentor and learning from working alongside them.

MY Volunteering: Leaders are tasked with volunteering their time at events and meetings.

MY Future: Leaders are tasked with producing a development plan and working towards completing their goals.

MY Projects: Leaders are tasked with identifying appropriate needs, and running a project to add benefits to themselves and their club.

The Young Leaders Academy has been introduced at SALTO to provide an opportunity to recruit, train, support and retain our youngest coaches. SALTO is always in need of new Young Leaders to join the programme as some younger, but experienced coaches, have to leave us to start employment in their chosen careers or progress to further or higher education at college or university.

We have appointed Charlotte Mitchell as “Captain” to mentor the young leaders and guide them through the process. The captain's role is to identify formal skills training courses to start them on their coaching career. The programme is free to join for clubs and BG members and as a club we will also invest in formal coach training as part of the My Learning aspect of the scheme. This is in the form of bursaries to cover training course costs but we expect the coached to volunteer to reimburse the club for this commitment as part of their My Volunteering.

In addition there are other volunteering opportunities at County and Regional events hosted at SALTO and elsewhere. For example, pictured on the extreme right is Daisy Dando, one of our first group first batch of young leaders, who was selected as a volunteer at the National BG British Championships held in Liverpool.

It takes a minimum of 12 months to complete the programme and more realistically 36, if the young person starts at age 14.
